CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 09:00

Report from Hafsúlan: This morning, as we sailed out, the water's surface was so flat, it was reflecting a perfect mirror image of the clouds. We had great conditions to admire the mountains surrounding Faxafloi Bay and it did not take too long until we could admire some cetaceans as well. Our first sighting was a shy little harbour porpoise. We found another small group of two or three porpoises later on as well! After the first porpoise we spotted a minke whale. The whale was calmly cruising nearby and the conditions even allowed us to see the spout of the animal. Not long after that we saw another minke whale. The highlight of the trip was a group of around 7 white-beaked dolphins. The animals were quite interactive today and displayed a wide range of behaviours. We saw them leaping, breaching, bow-riding and wake-riding. One of them passed by the boat a few times, much to our delight. On our way back to port, we were happy about the sightings of the morning and got to enjoy the sunshine some more.

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 13:00

Report from Hafsúlan: The conditions were superb this afternoon; calm waters, only a little wind and the sun shining on us. A while later we noticed a big spout in the distance and decided to check it out. It was a humpback whale. Time after time it showed off with graceful fluke dives that impressed the whole boat. We stayed with this individual for quite some time, but it was rather fast and hard to follow. As we had left this one we were drawn to big splashes in the horizon - white pectorial fins up in the air splashing at the surface by another humpback whale! As we approached it stopped with the splashing but quickly picked it up again. It was right next to the boat and we could more or less see the whole whale through the water. It was a very rare interaction. You could hear the trumpeting from the exhales loudly and it got very close to us. Absolutely lovely day at sea!
