CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 09:00

Report from Eldey: Our day of whale-watching began with an amazing weather, as the say remained calm for the whole morning. As we navigated into Faxaflói bay, various birds could be seen out on the sea, such as puffins, guillemots and many species of gulls. We sighted a group of five white-beaked dolphins. They were quite social, investigating our boat multiple times and getting really close to us. To minimize disturbance, we left the dolphin group having a fun time with them. Later we saw a harbour porpoise, but the animal was small and shy, we quickly lost track of it again. As the end of the tour approached, we set course back to Reykjavík, accompanied by a beautiful clear sky and glassy sea.

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 13:00

Report from Eldey: It was a beautiful sunny afternoon, perfect for sailing, with almost no wind in Faxaflói Bay. In our way out we were able to see different species of seabirds: Atlantic puffins, fulmars, a different species of seagulls. After some time sailing in the western part of the bay, we spotted a distant blow through the glare on the water. As we got a better view, we realized it was a humpback whale. We recognized it as a humpback whale by its distinctive hook-shaped dorsal fin, which became visible at the surface. At first, the whale was very calm, surfacing quietly, but later it began performing pectoral slaps, raising and striking its long white fins against the water. It was an amazing sight to witness, especially seeing the whale's impressive pectoral fins so clearly. When more boats started arriving in the area, we decided to leave to avoid adding any further disturbance to the whale. It was a memorable encounter.
