CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 09:00

Report from Eldey: On this sunny Monday, we sailed out into the bay. We were enjoying the beautiful landscape of Faxaflói while searching for cetaceans. After a bit, we saw a blow in the distance, a good indicator that we had a whale in the vicinity. As we were still getting closer the whale breached! It was a humpback whale called Mr. Bubbles, that we know quite well to be active! During this encounter, we were lucky to observe a series of behaviours: we saw several peduncle throws, tail slapping, another breach and some very high elegant flukes. This was an incredible encounter! As more boats were coming in, we moved on from the whale and continued searching. We then encountered a pod of 4 harbour porpoises swimming by. Their tiny dorsal fin shone with the sun and then we couldn't see them anymore. It was such a good morning and a great way to start the day.

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 13:00

Report from Eldey: Although we got weak cold winds, the sun continued to shine in between the clouds. So we sailed out into Faxaflói bay, eager to find some whales! A bit far from Reykjavik, we noticed a couple of dorsal fins. We encountered a pod of 7 white-beaked dolphins, that came very close to us and started to bowride! They were super curious and after spending a little while with them, we continued our journey to try to find more cetaceans. Then we spotted a blow in the distance! It belonged to a humpback whale, calmly coming up to the surface for a breath and going back down. This was the same whale we saw in the morning, Mr. Bubbles! After beautiful fluke dives, we decided to start heading back to Reykjavik, since we we quite far. On the way back, we spotted a nice pod of 4 more white-beaked dolphins being very active! One of them was jumping repeatedly and we had fun watching it while we continued our way home.

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 17:00

Report from Eldey: The sea was glassy and calm this afternoon as we sailed out under sunny skies. On our way out in search of wildlife, we encountered many birds and a beautiful northern fulmar flew right by us! It wasn't long until we spotted our first cetaceans, a pod of 7-10 white-beaked dolphins! These dolphins were cruising along, occasionally leaping out of the water, awing passengers! After a moment with the dolphins, we said goodbye to them and headed further out. This time, it took us a little while to find the cetaceans, but sure enough we were greeted by blows ahead! When we arrived, we could see that there were 3 humpback whales in this area and another small pod of 4-5 white-beaked dolphins! These dolphins were actively interacting with the whales, swimming in their slip stream and leaping close to their rostrums. What a treat! At this point, we were already running late and sadly had to say goodbye to the whales. We enjoyed the sail home in both sunshine and rain, but dry and warm inside the cozy saloon. It was a great end to a fantastic day!
