CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 09:00

Report from Eldey: Today, Faxaflói Bay woke up a little windy and wavy, but there were still enough suitable conditions for our boats to sail out. With our overalls and coats on, together with our passengers, we began our search at sea. The cetaceans were waiting out there. After sailing for a while, we spotted our first blow on the horizon, but suddenly we saw another one. In total, two humpback whales were in the area, with Keilir mountain in the background. Hundreds of seabirds were also very active, following the humpbacks. There was clearly plenty of food in the area fish for everyone!Later, we were lucky enough to witness the whales lunge feeding, confirming what we had suspected. These amazing individuals showed us their massive mouths wide open as they appeared out of the water, creating an unforgettable spectacle. In the same area we also had a brief encounter with two minke whales traveling fast and disappearing quickly.

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 13:00

Report from Eldey: Today’s afternoon tour started under much foggier conditions than earlier in the day, giving Faxaflói Bay a completely different atmosphere. Despite the limited visibility, we headed out hopeful that the whales were still around. After some searching, we found three humpback whales in the area. They were a bit elusive, surfacing a few times before disappearing back into the water, but we still managed to get good views of at least of one of them. They seemed to be calmly traveling in the same general area. Suddenly a minke whale was also in the area, and we could see the difference among the two species. Out of nowhere a small pod of white beaked dolphins gave us a nice surprise before heading back to the harbor, even doing bow riding very close to our boat. Although the fog made the afternoon a little more challenging, it was another enjoyable trip with great whale sightings and a  great atmosphere out on the bay

Birds encountered today were:

Atlantic puffin, Northern gannet, Artic tern, black-headed gull, black-legged kittiwake, great skua, Northern fulmar, lesser and great black-backed gull, herring gull, Artic skua, Great skua

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 15:00

Report from Hafsulan: It was still quite windy and wavy out at sea but nevertheless we went out full of excitement. We searched and searched and eventually we found a humback whale! It was however a very tricky individual and so we managed to see little more than a few blows and splashes. We kept searching onwards, far and wide but eventually we had to conclude our tour, leaving rather empty handed. This meant on the way back we handed out complementary tickets to all passengers. Brightening the mood with another chance at seeing our beautiful whales!

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 11:00

Report from Elding: The North Atlantic showed its rougher side today. We went out in a fresh breeze from the south, cloud covering the sky and slight rain drizzling. A typical Icelandic summer Tuesday. We had not to search for long as we spotted the first blows a few minutes after passing the lighthouse on Grótta. Getting closer it turned out to be a pair of humpback whales that was apparently feeding and moving fast. just after our captain Helgi steered the boat in a good position, both whales breached at the same time near our boat! This was the start of a very active phase during wich both animals breached and performed several tail and pectoral slaps on the surface. Even though the show just lasted a few minutes it was an unforgettable experience! Soon they calmed down and descended for quite long dives. We drifted in the area but just saw them again in the distance. We plowed back to the harbor after a rough but also great day out on the bay.
