CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 09:00
Report from Eldey: In the morning, we ventured out under overcast skies in quite chilly temperatures - so we bundled up in overalls and grabbed hot chocolates, ready to see what encounters nature might have in store for us. On our way out into the bay we spotted quite some groups of Atlantic puffins, going on feeding trips back and forth from the breeding islands close to the city. After 50 minutes of sailing, we excitingly spotted the first tall blow of the tour. This large exhale turned out to come from a humpback whale, and as we got close we discovered that there were quite some animals in the area around - 2 more humpback whales in quite close distance, and yet another 2 ones further out. As one of the humpback whales around seemed to be quite active, we decided to sail closer to this individual, and found out that it was lunge feeding under a flock of seabirds. We stopped the boat, and admired the large whale as it was travelling from side to side of our boat, sometimes even so close that we could spot its large white pectoral fins too. As we were watching the humpback whale, a speedy minke whale made a quick surface in the distance, but it seemed fast on its way. After some time with the feeding humpback whale, we left it be to not overstay our welcome, and as there quite some individuals around we sailed closer to another humpback whale. We could watch this second individual deep dive a few times, showing of its beautiful tail fluke. As it however seemed to spend quite some time under the surface, we quite quickly headed on out further into the bay to test our luck further. Suddenly, another humpback whale surprised us by surfacing just in front of us! And it was not just any individual, but our well known Davy Jones 2:nd, who has been a regular visitor here in Faxaflói Bay during the recent years. Davy seemed very relaxed this morning, staying very still near the surface, coming up for the occasional breath, which gave us a great chance of admiring the grand size of this whale. After some close encounters here, we decided to leave, as Davy travelled further away from us. With a boat full of big smiles we started our return to Reykjavik, and on our journey we were very lucky to discover yet another two humpback whales traveling side by side. We made a stop to see what these two were up to, and were lucky to also watch this pair come up for some exhales just next to our boat. What a wonderful humpback-filled tour!

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 11:00
Report from Hafsulan: As we sailed into the bay, we caught some light waves. They were nothing too bad, and definitely brought some extra fun to the tour. We spent some 20 minutes searching, before finding our first two humpback whales. They were both resting, possibly sleeping, swimming calmly on the surface. We had some fun with them, before moving on. We soon found another humpback whale. It was also resting, but this time, it had a pod of five white-beaked dolphins accompanying it. The dolphins were definitely more energetic than the whales, breaching and approaching our boat multiple times, in a very fun show of curiosity. We then left them be, and the rest of the tour were filled with a sea full of humpback whales (10 more sightings), most of which were resting. Likely, these whales were using the morning hours to rest and gain energy for hunting, later on during the day.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00
Report from Eldey: The overcast skies persisted in the afternoon, with quite some rainclouds above, but that did not stop us from venturing out with high spirits in full rain-gear, ready to take on whatever adventure that was waiting for us. And what a spoilt adventure it became, as Faxaflói bay was full of humpback whales! After about 40 minutes, blows started appearing everywhere. We started off by observing one deep diving humpback whale, getting a glimpse of the large tail fluke in the sky. As it dove for quite long, we ventured on to discover a pod of 6 white beaked dolphins that surfaced just by our port side, giving us a quick glimpse of their striped side patterns. The dolphins took off, and so did we, to later find one solitary humpback whale, and one pair of humpback whales that were feeding together. The duo became a trio as the solitary individual joined in this feeding frenzy, and we were even treated to some impressive bubble net feeding, first a big bubble cloud that later evolved into full bubble spirals. After watching this feast, we left the hungry whales behind as more blows started appearing around us. One humpback was even breaching about 1 kilometer away, we could excitingly see it fully jumping out of the surface several times, but when we arrived its energy seemed to have worn off. When we got to the area, we found two more solitary humpback whales, and another pair which did synchronized deep dives just in front of us! One of them we excitingly recognized fast as the well known Davy Jones 2:nd. The pair split, and Davy stayed diving close to our bow, and the second individual rolled over on its side, pec-slapping by our back. After this wonderful encounter, we started our return back towards the city. Throughout the tour, two solitary minke whales also made a brief passing, one of them actively feeding close to the humpback whales. On our journey back, another 5 tall blows appeared around us. We stopped to watch one individual perform some deep dives, before continuing towards Reykjavik as the rain intensified. What an absolute abundant tour!
