Report from Eldey: On this particularity calm day we set out in search for whales and dolphins. We enjoyed the beautiful landscape and learned about whale evolution before spotting a dark shape coming out of the water. It was a minke whale! This individual had no interest in the boat and disappeared in the waves after surfacing 3 times. We did some donuts in the area to give this whale some time to come up again before continuing. There were rumors about a larger whale up ahead and when we got close, a blow appeared on the surface. This was the blow of a humpback whale and suddenly it was right next to the boat! We got treated to a few magnificent fluke dives before saying goodbye. An elusive harbour porpoise was seen passing the boat at full speed and after this cute encounter we made our way back home.

Report from Hafsúlan: Some clouds covered the sun as we left the harbor in a light wind from the south-east. The conditions were great to spot the wildlife of Faxalói. On our way out we already spotted a lot of Atlantic puffins and other sea birds. As we got to an area where a lot of sea gull were busy at work on the surface it did not take log for the blow of a humpback whale to be spotted as well. Getting closer turned out a bit tricky as the whale went for longer deep dives with just a few short dives in between. We spend some time with this whale before we continued our search and found another humpback whale just a few miles further. This whale was deep diving as well and so we got some nice looks at its impressive fluke. All in all a great tour in wonderful weather.

Report from Eldey: This afternoon was a great example of how nature really can surprise us. As soon as we passed by Akurey island close to the harbour, we already had our first whale sighting - a minke whale that was surfacing with quite short intervals in front of our boat. We stopped to marvel at the sweet minke, but continued our journey further out when it went for a deeper dive. The sun was shining, and we were all enjoying the views from upper deck. Then suddenly, a blow! We could feel how the excitement arose amongst us as we got closer and discovered that the large exhale came from a humpback whale. We could watch this individual fluke dive multiple times, which was absolutely gorgeous in the glare reflected on the surface. We noticed more and more seabirds in the area, and we could confirm it was a lot of food in the water as the humpback whale suddenly started creating bubbles just a few meters from our boat. These bubbles indeed indicated - a bubble net! As soon as we realized, the humpback whale lunged its grand mouth through the surface, engulfing large amounts of prey at once. What a cool sight! We watched some more fluke dives, before our focus shifted to some splashes in the distance. We decided to find out what caused this commotion, and found out it was some breaches from a pod of 12 white beaked dolphins. When we arrived, we discovered that they were not alone, but also close to two other humpback whales. We were able to see some more gorgeous fluke dives, and to our delight the dolphins continued breaching as we got closer. This was a beautiful ending to such a sighting-filled tour, we sure made it out in time for their lunch!

Report from Hafsúlan: We left the harbour with fair conditions, a bit of clouds with the occasional sun shining through and very calm seas. We sailed for about 30 minutes before spotting splashes and blows, upon arriving in the area we found an incredible sight. One humpback whale surrounded by 3-4 white beaked dolphins. It was an incredible sighting as the dolphins were swimming around the whale and jumping next to it. The whale did not seemed impressed and occasionally rolled on its side and gave out trumpeting blows. After a while the dolphins left and we watched as the whale produced very tight bubble rings in an attempt to concentrate prey and lunge feed. This bubble-net feeding behavior was witnessed about 5-6 times before another humpback whale joined the party! There were now two whales together, side by side, feeding and coming up to the surface with great inertia after a lunge. However, the bubble netting was over, and only observed for the first individual. After a certain time we had to reluctantly say goodbye and leave these fantastic individuals. Right before entering the port we had news of a minke whale close to the harbour, we waited for a little bit, and actually managed to spot it for a few times before it swam away from us very fast. Another incredible tour drew to an end, big smiles all around and profound gratefulness for what we experienced.

Report from Eldey: We set sail in very good conditions today, with calm seas and a light breeze it was great to be out. After only 5 minutes we stumbled upon a minke whale just outside the harbour! It´s amazing to see these animals so close to home and this was a friendly one, swimming all around the boat. This sighting was just a taste of what was to come. Further out in the bay we spotted two blows. There were two humpback whales in the same area, feeding and showing their flukes. They moved closer together and suddenly one of them came up right next to the boat, mounth wide open! A beautiful lunge feed and even some attempts at bubble net feeding. They joined together, trumpeting and tail throwing and coming very close to the boat. It was hard to say goodbye, but we managed. We turned back in the direction of Reykjavik and as we were going a minke whale decided to stress test us by surfacing maybe a meter in front of the boat! We passed by a third humpback whale and this juvenile showed us their beautiful fluke. A last sighting before we turned on the music and sailed back home.

Report from Hafsúlan: Even though some clouds decided to cover the sky and the occasional drop of "liquid sunshine" fell we went out with the sun lowering on the horizon. Not far past the lighthouse on Grótta, we spotted the first whale of the tour. The humpback whale was first spotted by one of our guests who saw the dark back of the animal first. Captain Helgi did his best to get us closer and as we approached slowly, it turned out to be 2 humpback whales feeding on the surface. What a wonderful sighting to begin with! Soon the situation got more exiting as the whales started to throw their tail high out of the water, slapping their massive pectoral fins on the surface and even breaching right in front of our boat. After the spectacular show, they started bubble net feeding close to us and we could see the spiral of bubbles round up the fish before the whale surfaced right in the middle of the trap with its mouth wide open to catch as many fish as possible. To round everything up also a large but widely spread out pod of at least 15 white-beaked dolphins appeared and started to play along our boat and the humpback whales. On our way back to Reykjavik we enjoyed the most beautiful sunset behind us and a wonderful rainbow in our front. A tour we will never forget!
