Few natural phenomena are as mesmerising as the aurora borealis. These shifting curtains of colour sweep across the polar skies, painting them in hues of green, pink, and violet. While their appearance may seem unpredictable, scientists have developed ways to understand when and where they might occur and by studying the activity levels, we can estimate the likelihood of seeing them.
NORTHERN LIGHTS CRUISE | 22:00
Report from Elding: Our first northern lights cruise of the season and the conditions were near perfect! The sea was flat, almost no wind at all, a kp of 2 and mostly clear skies! Excitedly we sailed out, waiting patiently for the last bits of sunlight to fade away. A bit of a wait later and darkness fully fell, revealing a sky full of bright stars overhead. Not much longer after that, a faint glow appeared, could those be northern lights?! Yes they were! quickly they picked up, brighter and brighter, two small patches appeared that then merged into a long ribbon abovem mount Esja! The lights faded in and out, going brighter and dimmer over and over revealing nature's most incredible spectacle! This lasted for around 15 minutes until they faded away one last time. After that we enjoyed the rest of our cruise out at sea, until eventually we sailed back, passing Reykjavík's lit up skyline.
