Report from Eldey: The sun was shining brightly this morning, and in combination with the calm seas we were very excited to sail into Faxafloi. On our way out, we encountered two pods of 2 harbour porpoises, and after a few little splashes and some quick looks we continued our search for other cetaceans. For our next sighting, we were pleasantly surprised by 3 white-beaked dolphins. There was a calf with his/her mother and some of the individuals were jumping, so we enjoyed watching this pod until our eye was caught by a much larger animal... a humpback whale! We encountered 5 more dolphins on our way to the whale. This pod was a bit more curious than the first one, but after some time they seemed to have gotten distracted by something underwater and we continued our course to the humpback whale. We recognized this individual as Neila, and she frequently came up and showed us the fluke every time they went for a deeper dive, swimming rather calmly. Then - all of a sudden - she breached very close to the boat! She then came up within meters from our portside, and we said goodbye to her after a beautiful, close-up flukedive and started heading back to harbour.

Report from Eldey: As we set sail this afternoon the wind picked up a bit, so we put on our layers and set sail out into the bay. We still had the beautiful sun shining and with amazing visibility we could admire the horizon as far as Snæfellsjökull! As we were looking around the bay we spotted the blow of one humpback whale! This individual was very active and showed off for us by peduncle throwing. It is always so impressive to see them raise their tails high out of the surface and slap down into the waves. They then showed off their fluke, which is always very beautiful to see. After multiple surface sequences and more fluke dives, it was time to wave this humpback goodbye and head back to port. With the sun still shining high in the sky we sailed back and admired some of our Northern gannets and Northern fulmars soaring across the bay before heading back to port. What a nice tour!

Report from Eldey: With the sun still shining brightly and the sea calmer than the forecast predicted, we happily sailed into Faxafloi. We spotted a blow early on, and quickly realized that there was not one, but two humpback whales swimming in front of us! They were accompanied by lots of plunge-diving northern gannets and gracefully gliding northern fulmars, who were also part of the feeding frenzy. The humpbacks were swimming side by side and occasionally made bubblenet rings and lunged out of the water. We recognised one of the individuals as Davy Jones II, but we weren't sure who the other individual was. While we were watching the humpbacks, a minke whale also made a brief appearance in the same area. We stayed here, admiring all of these different animals enjoying the abundance of food that Icelandic waters have to offer. What a great way to end our day on the bay!
