Few natural phenomena are as mesmerising as the aurora borealis. These shifting curtains of colour sweep across the polar skies, painting them in hues of green, pink, and violet. While their appearance may seem unpredictable, scientists have developed ways to understand when and where they might occur and by studying the activity levels, we can estimate the likelihood of seeing them.

Report from Elding: This evening we sailed into a very windy bay with a clear sky above us. It didn't take long until we began seeing faint streaks of aurora twinkle above mount Esja, as they faded in an out of view. Then came a moment of stillness where all we could see was the starry night sky, but this moment did not last long as soon enough the lights re-appeared, greater than before. They covered the left side of Esja and stretched over to the east, becoming brighter with every minute that passed. Eventually, our time ran out, and we began to head back to Reykjavík whilst the aurora continued to dance overhead.
