Report from Eldey: What a beautiful day out on Faxaflói! The sun was shining, the sea was wonderfully calm, and with perfect visibility, we couldn’t have asked for better conditions to head north in search of wildlife. It didn’t take long before we started seeing life all around us. harbour porpoises seemed to be everywhere today, appearing here and there, in total a big pod of 10-15. In the distance, we could also spot several minke whales (around 4), keeping us curious as we continued towards an area where we hoped for a closer encounter. We came across to the humpback whales area, two travelling together and another one a little further away. The first individual we encountered on its own was a juvenile, giving us a lovely opportunity to watch it very close. We then made our way towards the two humpbacks travelling together, where we recognized one very familiar individual: Neila! She is a common whale in our catalogue and one that is especially easy to identify thanks to her very characteristic tail. Every fluke is like a fingerprint, and Neila’s is certainly one we know well! After spending some time with these magnificent humpbacks, we began our journey back to Reykjavík. But the surprises weren’t over yet…Suddenly, a minke whale appeared out of nowhere right in front of the boat! It was a quick and unexpected encounter that gave us one last whale sighting before heading home. With happy faces and wonderful sightings, we made our way back home after another memorable day at sea!

Report from Eldey: What an absolutely amazing tour we had today. The sky was completely clear with the sun shining on us. There was barely any wind and the ocean laid flat like velvet. The conditions were perfect, and it helped us to spot the cetaceans in the bay. We did not have to go far until we had a minke whale. It came up frequently and gave us nice views. After this sighting, we had more or less eight more minke whales passing by, and maybe four of those gave us good looks. Then the sightings escalated and we had SO many harbour porpoises. We first had a pod of three on the left, then five to the right, then four more, six more, four to the left and then three to the left. It was crazy! Since the ocean was so smooth we could see them well. So all in all, approximately 25 individuals, at least, through out the tour. Some were of course further away, but visibility was good today. We saw a big blow on the horizon, and it came from a humpback whale! We had one that was doing nice fluke dives. All of a sudden after that one went for a deep dive, big bubbles appeared right in front of the boat. This came from a second individual. It was very cool and so exciting seeing the bubbles surround us, not knowing were the whale would come up. As it surfaced it showed off its beautiful fluke many times. After spending quite some time with these individuals we carried on to a third humpback whale that we saw in the distance. It was diving for quite some time and fluked very quickly after resurfacing, but it was still great. We could also see the blows from at least two more humpbacks in the area. The bay was so full of life today. As we sailed back home we stopped briefly for a minke whale. What a wonderful day out at sea!

Report from Eldey: What an absolutely amazing tour we had today! Our last tour of the day started with two minke whales,not even half an hour after departing the harbour. After this, we had another minke whale at a distance before the sightings really started to pick up. We then headed into the humpback whale area, where things became very exciting. We first came across two humpback whales together. They were giving us beautiful fluke dives, and at times they came incredibly close to us. It was amazing to watch these two individuals surfacing and diving side by side, with their different flukes clearly visible.After spending some time with them, we came across another two humpback whales together. This meant that we had seen four different humpback whale individuals in total, each with their own unique fluke patterns. Then, suddenly, we spotted a breaching whale! We headed towards the area, but by the time we arrived, there was no sign of more breaching, only a few elusive surfaces, so we left the area. We continued sailing, hoping for another opportunity, and luckily, we didn’t have to wait too long. Another humpback whale breached in the distance! This time we were treated to an incredible display, with the whale breaching many, many times. It was such an exciting sight to see, and brought our total number of humpback whales for the tour to five different individuals. As we sailed back towards home, we were once again surrounded by life. We spotted harbour porpoises along the way, giving us a lovely final wildlife encounter to end an already fantastic day out at sea. What a wonderful tour, with minke whales, five humpbacks, spectacular flukes, and several breaching moments. A truly unforgettable day on the water!
