Today's classic whale watching tours from Reykjavík at 09:00 and 13:00 are on schedule. The afternoon tour at 17:00 is cancelled !

Report from Eldey: Report from Eldey: We bundled up in our red rain coats and overalls on this gloomy, rainy morning, ready to face the windy bay. As we sailed out into Faxaflói, we passed 3 pods of 4 harbour porpoises, an exciting find, especially considering the wavy conditions! We continued on, and took a big loop in the bay, admiring the seabirds, like the majestic Northern gannets, often referred to as the queen of the North Atlantic owing to their regal appearance. We changed directions plenty of time searching other different areas of the bay. However after a lot of efforts searching we weren't able to find anything else. So as the tour sightings did not reach our regular standards, we offered everybody on board a complementary ticket to have another opportunity to repeat a whale watching tour with us. We hope to see you again!

Report from Eldey: As we set out in the afternoon, the wind had picked up, tossing the spray from the white-caps all around. Challenging conditions for facing the bay and spotting, but we were determined! As we were heading out, we saw the tiny splashes of 2 harbour porpoises that disappeared as quickly as they came, living up to their elusive nature. As we continued on, our determination and perseverance was rewarded, when we spotted a big splash in the distance, over 3 miles away! We turned, and made our way over, taking the growing waves from the side, swaying. On our way, we spotted a lone white-beaked dolphin, moving rather quickly, and clearly not open to having any visitors, so we pushed forward, eager to get to the whale responsible for creating all the commotion. As we got closer, we saw some blows, more breaching and some tail and pectoral slaps, so we were clearly approaching a humpback whale. Not just any humpback whale, it was Niela, a very well know and loved whale in Faxaflói! We recognized her from her fluke, as she was throwing it around as she was lob-tailing and peduncle throwing. We got to see her nice and close, she was coming up for breaths, showing off many fluke dives, but not spending a lot of time under. We got to spend a lovely time with her, and as she began swimming further out (but not before leaving a massive poop at the surface, illustrating the whale pump, a key ecological function these whales fill), we took it as our sign to begin making our way back to shore, heading for the port. What a lucky tour!
