Tour at 17:00
We sailed out in a bit windy weather and it shortly started to rain. We started with the puffin island Akurey where we saw very many puffins. Afterwards we sailed out to Faxaflói bay and decided to go a little further this time to try to find something more than we had done in the last couple of tours. And what a rewarding long sail! After sailing for about an hour and a half we saw very many feeding gannets which were spectacular to watch. Shortly after that the captain spotted, to our great surprise, a BASKING SHARK! It came extremely close to the boat and we got to see it really well! Our brave passengers who had stood outside the whole time were well rewarded. A basking shark is not something we see everyday so this was fantastic! We then saw around 5 minke whales and two of them came quite close to the boat. We could hear the breath of one of them and smell another one. We then sailed back and were back after a 4,5 hours. A great tour!
Tour at 13:00
We sailed straight out this time. On our way we saw a lot Puffins on the water. We saw also some Guillemots, Arctic Terns, Fulmars, Kittiwakes, Gulls, and Arctic Skua doing the tour. It took use quite a long time but we spotted some Harbour Porpoises but they were quite elusive. So we went on and on our way back we spotted a Minke Whale. It surfaced twice. Unfortunately it took us quite a long time to find them, our time was already up and we needed to head back. On our way back to the harbour we visited Akurey and there were many Puffins sitting outside their borrows, sitting on the water’s surface and flying around the island.
Tour at 9:00
We headed straight out into Faxaflói bay. It was cloudy but nice weather. We saw some Black-backed Gulls, Puffins, Guillemots, Arctic Skuas, Fulmars, Kittiwakes, Gannets and Arctic Terns on the way. After a long search for the whales towards the end we finally spotted a Minke Whale when we were on our way back to the harbour. We then ended the tour with a stop in Akurey where the Puffins had filled the Island and were flying like crazy all around the Island as well as sitting tight on the Island itself.
