Tour at 17:00
On this tour the wind was stronger than at 13:00, but the sun was still shining and we sailed out on the bay in high spirits. We saw a couple of minke whales, some of them difficult like this morning but some of them we could see very well. Then we spotted a big blow. A humpback! We were very pleased with this great sighting, it came up to the surface a couple of times with a big blow and then it deep dived, lifting the beautiful fluke. This happened four or five times and it was great to watch. The crew was also very excited because it was an individual we have never seen before. We can recognize each humpback by the unique pattern on the underside of the fluke and this particular pattern we have never seen before. It was a large humpback, and it will hopefully be in the area for many days! ;-)
Tour at 13:00
Our tour started in Akurey where there were just as few puffins as in Lundey this morning. Hmm... Hopefully more of them will show themselves soon! Out on Faxaflói bay the minke whales were a bit more cooperative than this morning ;-) We got several nice sightings when the whales surfaced close to the boat (more than once) and there were lots of seabirds as well. The wind had picked up a little but the sun was shining and the visibility was good.
Tour at 9:00
We started the tour out in Lundey, the puffin island, where there were very few puffins to see! Yesterday there were several puffins in the island, but this morning they must have been inside their "two room apartment" or somewhere out on the bay hunting for sand eel for their baby chicks. Then we headed out on the bay to search for the whales. We found minke whales, but they were difficult on this tour, almost always surfacing just once (or twice) making it hard for us to get a good look. They were deep diving a lot and we could see on the captain's fish finder that the food was several meters down, not in the surface, and that might explain the long dives. On the way back home to the harbour we were lucky and got a nice sighting when a minke whale surfaced three times right under a flock of feeding birds.
