Report from Eldey: Like the previous days, we sailed out from Grindavík today, a small fishing town located on the south coast of Iceland. We had just started to sail east along the Reykjanes Peninsula when we spotted a big blow behind us. So we turned around and waited for this animal to resurface which took quite a while. However, after a few minutes the animal was up again and we could confirm that it was a humpback whale. It only surfaced a couple of times before going for a dive again and maintained this behaviour during the entire encounter: it would come up a few times 150-400 m away from us and then go for very long dives. It wasn't very easy to follow it but at least it stayed in the same area where it was probably feeding. It was also amazing to see this humpback so close to land, it would have been possible to just watch it from the shore. After a while we left this humpback to look for other cetaceans. However, we had to turn around after some time and on the way back found the humpback whale still in the same area. We saw it a few more times but it was still going for these extremely long dives which required a lot a patience from us. While waiting for the whale to resurface, we could at least enjoy the stunning landscape and the sun setting above the ocean.
