Report from Eldey: The day only improved as we journeyed out into the bay of Faxflói. A flat calm sea and visibility all the way to Snæfellsjökull over 100km away and usually covered by clouds. It was just north of Akranes we had our first whale encounter, a humpback whale slowly surfacing and showing it´s beautiful fluke as it went down for a deep dive. We were able to follow and watch it slowly travelling for about 30 minutes and suddenly a minke whale also popped up close by too, a humpback whale in front and a minke whale on our left. Amazing. As the humpback whale was starting to head towards a big flock of feeding birds we followed it just in case it got more actively feeding. but it changed its mind and took another course. Other boats were coming over and it's not good to have too many boats around one individual so we left and went searching for other species. In the distance another humpback whale spouted, another chilled out whale travelling just beneath the surface and not showing the fluke, We were still able to get some nice photographs with the beautiful landscape in the background. A fantastic afternoon to finish an incredible whale watching day.

Report from Eldey: We had a beautiful, mostly overcast morning. The missing bright sunshine and calm sea actually provided perfect conditions for whale spotting. Just after leaving the harbour we already spotted a small pod of 12 white-beaked dolphins, heading towards the lighthouse Grotta. Those animals are very commonly seen in Faxafloi due to its richness in fish. So it was no surprise to find the pod feeding and moving around very actively and quick. We followed the pod around for about 20 to 30 minutes, before moving on to explore further into Icelands largest bay. It did only take us another 40 minutes to encounter our second sighting of the day: a humpback whale. Even though it was a different individual than seen the previous day, the animal was moving solitarily through the waters in the north of the bay. It seemed very calm and relaxed and we were able to enjoy some beautiful fluke lifts infront of the fantastic background of the mountains Akrafjall and Esja. We were following the animal around for another 20 minutes, before heading back into port. It was another fabulous day to be at sea and we had a whale of a time, being really fortunate to spot two species of the most commonly seen ones in Faxafloi today.

Bird species seen today include: northern fulmar, eider duck, comorant, black-legged kittiwakes, black backed gulls, long tailed ducks.
We are sailing from the Old Harbour in Reykjavík today at 9:00 & 13:00. There could always be some movement out on the bay, so if you are prone to seasickness, we have seasickness tablets free of charge.
