Report from Eldey: The wind picked up this evening causing a bumpy ride out in the bay so instead we traveled close to land gaining shelter for a windy but much smoother ride. We enjoyed the numerous birds flying by; puffins, fulmars, kittiwakes and eider ducks. Once passing the mouth of Hvalfjörður the water was wonderfully calm with a lot more birds life, particularly the arctic terns chirping away. Small splashes were seen in the far distance, most likely dolphins, it was going to take us about 15mins to get to that area and unfortunately they were long gone when we arrived. We continued searching but even though the landscape was beautiful, the birdlife was plentiful, All in all it was a lovely tour but with no whales and dolphins we offered our passengers complimentary tickets.

Report from Elding: The sunshine and incredibly gorgeous weather continued into our afternoon. We were able to spot a lot of bird life in the bay and I definitely exhausted most of my knowledge on them. Even though I also shared quite a bit of information on the whales and dolphins we most commonly encounter in Faxafloi Bay, they did not seem to be seen on this tour. On the way back into harbour we spotted a small pod of 3-4 white-beaked dolphins twice, but the animals were very elusive and kept disappearing on us, so we continued our journey back. It was a most fantastic day out at sea and we all enjoyed it, but nether the less it was not the kind of tour we wanted our passengers to witness, so we offered complimentary tickets for another, hopefully more successful tour with us.

Report from Eldey: The sun was shining up in the sky and the wind calmed down for a while that made our journey really pleasant. we headed straight to the the area we were in our last tour to hopefully find these beautiful animals, but they were really busy catching the fish in other feeding grounds and we could not spot them. The wind started to blow so we decided to find shelter from the shore. It was a short sighting but we saw a pod of 4-5 harbour porpoises swimming next to the boat. We checked a large area but it seems like not too much activity was happening in the bay and then we decided to give our passenger the chance to come back out again with a complementary ticket.

Report from Elding: The winds were finally down, and the weather was looking wonderful, sunny and calm. Just about 20 minutes into the tour we spotted some splashes about a mile away in front of us. We sailed to that area and found a pod of 3-5 white-beaked dolphins. They headed straight towards us and swam around and under our boat, giving us a really good look at their streamlined bodies and the coloration of their skin. We could stay with them for a while when suddenly we found that more dolphins had joined in and at that point we had about 8-9 dolphins around us. After a while we lost track of them and sailed a bit further out were we found another pod of these cute dolphins, about 6-7 individuals. They did exactly the same as the other pod we saw earlier, swam right up to us and started bow-riding in front of the boat. We then noticed lots of birds gathering around in the distance and spotted a blow in the midst of the flock of birds, and as we got closer we confirmed it to be a minke whale. It was quite elusive and seemed to be feeding, and we only got a brief glimpse of it. We ran out of time and headed back to the harbor, happy with the tour and the awesome weather.

Report from Eldey: Once again the sun was on our back, enjoying the AMAZING weather we have been having lately, albeit the wind speed has been a bit problematic the last days. We headed straight to the same area as the day before and found it still teaming with life. Huge flocks of birds showed us the way. At least 2-3 minke whales were busy feeding, which was wonderful for them but difficult for our passengers to spot them as they surfaced fast and unpredictably. We then saw and investigated a larger blow we hoped from a larger whale species such as a humpback whale but after two exhales (blows) it disappeared. Must have been taking very long dives and travelling long distances between. We suddenly were delighted by a small pod of 4-6 harbour porpoises. So cute as they surfed the swells just a few meters from our vessel. It was a rather difficult tour to show our passengers but very happy to see the bay full of life. We offered our passengers complimentary tickets so hopefully they can join us again and see them in a slower mode.

Birds seen today: atlantic puffin, arctic skua, arctic tern, northern gannet, eider duck, black-headed gull, black-legged kittiwake, great black-backed gull, glaucus gull, common guillemot, northern fulmar, manx shearwater, razorbill, black guillemot.
We are sailing from the Old Harbour in Reykjavík today. The wind is picking up in speed a bit later today therefore the sea will be quite rough, so if you are prone to seasickness we have some seasickness tablets free of charge at our ticket office. The sun is shining, but make sure to dress warmly and make use of our warm overalls as it is always colder on sea than on land.
