Today we will be operating on our lovely vessel Eldey for the 09:00 and 13:00 Classic Whale Watching tours. Make sure to dress appropriately for the tours as it is always colder on sea than land.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 09:00

Report from Eldey: After three stormy days it was great to back on the sea. With beautiful snow filling the skies, we lived a winter weather this morning. The sea was however still quite choppy which caused a few green faces during the tour but most enjoyed the movement and the guide provided some help tips to reduce the unpleasant feeling for others. We traveled long and far to areas of success and in one of the areas we had a nice sighting of at least 6-8 amazing white-beaked dolphins including adults and juveniles. They were milling, which is a type of resting behavior, so super easy to follow and photograph. At some point we and the dolphins felt how the snow got heavier and at times appeared to be "blowing sideways.". The dolphins stayed for a while with us. We had beautiful birdlife too: northern gannets, northern fulmars, great cormorants, European shags and other birds that kept us entertained. On the way home we enjoyed the warm of the indoor saloons, the music and some of our guests also enjoyed a hot chocolate or a whale-punch (hot chocolate with rum). It was a great experience for our guests and another great day at the office for the crew.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00

Report from Eldey: The swell was still strong this afternoon but slowly getting better. We directly went to the area were we found the pod of dolphins this morning. We explored for a while without having any luck. A few flocks of european shags rafting in the water gave us some hope, the birds often being present in areas rich in food and the cetaceans chasing the same fish than the birds. The dolphins from this morning were not showing up so we headed more to the north. It was a good choice made by our captain because we finaly found a pod of 5 white-beaked dolphins. We saw then surfacing a few times but they quickly disappeared. It was time to head back to Reykjavik so and those marine mammals were probably not in the mood to be approached so we took the direction of the harbour. The wind was getting stronger and filled with snowflakes, giving to our passenger the real icelandic viking experience ! The sIighting was very short so we gave complimentary tickets to our passengers to have the chance to come back in the next two years.
