Today we will be operating on our lovely vessel Eldey for the 09:00 and 13:00 Classic Whale Watching tours. Make sure to dress appropriately for the tours as it is always colder on sea than on land.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 09:00

Report from Eldey: Today was a very special day for us as it was the first in a long time that we got to see blue skies and the warmth of the sun on our faces. We had a little wind from the east of about 6-8m/s but for most of the tour we stayed in quite sheltered waters and only later on felt the cold winds. Soon more and more of the free overalls where used to wrap up warm. It was only after about 30 mins another whale watching vessel let us know of a small pod of white-beaked dolphins were spotted. On the way to them our watchful passengers spotted another pod of about 7 individuals. A very relaxed pod that were resting most likely and we saw them very well for a while. Soon this pod was joined by another larger pod and in the end we had at least 30 white-beaked dolphins around us. We stayed and watched them for a long time, at least 30 minutes before leaving them in peace and trying to see if we could find any whales. We took a large loop and found ourselves amongst many northern fulmars, birdlife was very nice. Fulmars, kittiwakes and other seagulls all around. We found another pod of 5-6 white-beaked dolphins but these were more elusive and we decided to leave them in peace and continue. No other cetaceans were encountered but the skies opened up and the landscape was beautiful.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00

Report from Eldey: We left the harbor at best conditions: The sea was pretty calm, almost no swell and the visibility great. Fantastic conditions for a winter adventure out at sea. We really enjoyed breathing the fresh air and the beautiful view at the surrounding landscape. Our first wildlife encounter today was a beautiful pod of about 10 white-beaked dolphins which were milling in the area. One of them was our superstar Beethoven, that we know since 2013! As they did not seem to be bothered by our presence and continued swimming peaceful we stayed with these dolphins for quite a while and watched them become curious and sometimes surfacing in less than 50m to our vessel. A little later we saw some bigger dorsal fins in about 300m distance. When approaching the area, we identified those belonging to another four white-beaked dolphins which were feeding in the area. As they were not in the mood we left them and went further out. On our way back, a minke whale crossed its path with us and even though it that was quite difficult to follow it was a great sighting. Although this was our last encounter for this trip we enjoyed our ride back watching the red light of the settling sun on the snow covered mountains while warming up with some hot drinks.
