CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING 09:00

Report from Eldey: Grey skies greeted us as we set sail into the beautiful Faxaflói bay. Right after leaving the harbour, some passengers spotted a small pod of 3-4 harbour porpoises hurriedly moving through the waves, like they were on a mission. Then, about 30 minutes into our sail, we spotted a large gathering of seabirds nearby, and found 4-5 minke whales underneath them! They were all scattered around, and at one point, we were practically surrounded by minkes! They were likely feeding in this area, as hinted by the birds, and we stopped to appreciate them for a moment. Then, we continued our sail. Suddenly, as if they came out of thin air, two white-beaked dolphins appeared right next to us! At this point, they were close enough to bow ride with us, and the passengers even got a great look at their colouration underwater as they swam with the slipstream of the boat. What a treat! We continued on a little further, but nothing was to be found, so we left the bay happy and satisfied with out lovely encounters!

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING l 11:00

Report from Hafsulan: Headed out into Faxaflói Bay today with just a bit of swell, and the visibility was great. We sailed for about half an hour before spotting a group of white-beaked dolphins, probably around 15 of them. They stuck around for a bit, swimming alongside us and putting on a nice show with bow riding and some high jumps. A bit later, we caught a quick glimpse of a minke whale, but it was pretty elusive and didn’t stay near the boat for long. We kept searching for a while until eventually it was time to go back to the harbour.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR l 13:00

Report from Eldey: We went out in weather as Icelandic as it could be. Overcast, rainy and quite some wind from the south east. Our captain decided to set course towards the south eastern part of Faxaflói in search of the whales. Not just did we stay out of the more choppy regions further north, we also searched another area than during our tour before. The plan came together as, after some searching, we spotted a big splash on the surface . Up until then we had spotted 2 illusive harbor porpoise that quickly vanished between the waves. As we got closer we saw more blows and could identify a minke whale and a humpback whale that was lunge feeding on the surface and showing some nice fluke dives to get underneath the fish for attacking them from below. We had to decide and chose to approach the humpback.  We got some great views on him and were surprised as a small pod of 5 white-beaked dolphins decided to join the feeding action. After a slow start the tour ended with great impressions of the majestic animals.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR l 15:00

Report from Elding: This afternoon we experienced a very common type of rain in Iceland: the one that comes from all directions onto your face! However, we decided to put on overalls and we were ready to go find the whales. After almost an hour of sailing, we saw 2 bows in the distance, together: they belonged to humpback whales that soon we found out it they were 4 all together! There was also another humpback a bit further away but at the same area, splashing with breaches and peduncle throws very actively! We decided to check these 4 together that were having a feast. The many birds around could give away easily their location, always coming to the surface when the whales came up as well, taking advantage of all the food. And these whales were very fast. They were almost circling us, going to different directions and distances, sometimes even popping up meters away from our boat!! It was amazing to see them. One of them started to do peduncle throws repeatedly, stunting the fish! The rain was not on our way to stay with these whales, but the time was. Unfortunately, we were very far from home and we needed to start our way back. However, we had spend a long time with them, since we were completely alone with this active whales! It was incredible. On the way back, we got some hot chocolates and very happy with all the sightings.
