CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 09:00

Report from Eldey: Today, we sailed out to a somewhat smooth ocean with little wind but still quite the swell. Northerly winds brought some icy air, giving us a bit of an Arctic experience, especially with the overalls on deck. About an hour into the tour, excitement started spreading across the boat because we spotted our first whale! It was a humpback whale! We go to observe the animal a couple of times, but didn't stay too long as there was several boats in the area. The excitement of the first sighting hadn't worn off yet, when we spotted another humpback whale! This one was spending a lot of time at the surface and displayed its fluke quite consistently. Our captain, Ottó, even called it "fluky-ful"! After these fantastic whale encounters, we carried on, and on our way back, we were very amused to observe the Atlantic puffins trying to take off for flight. It was a very nice trip!

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 13:00

Report from Eldey: In true Icelandic weather we set sail looking for wildlife this afternoon. The rain and wind didn´t stop us from enjoying the adventure and we were rewarded for that! After a hour of sailing we spotted a blow behind us, a good reminder to always look all around. It was quite far away so we were able to see the powerful blow a couple of times before confirming that this was a humpback whale! Not just any whale, this was Chopper, a whale we seen a few times now, so a regular in this bay. Chopper was surfacing a lot, coming close to the boat and we spend a lovely time with this whale! After a while we decided to leave them be and continue our way. We saw lots of different birds, learned about the stories behind the landscape and then made our way back to Reykjavik.

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 17:00

Report from Eldey: Because the day could get better, we went out again! The conditions changed from big swell and little wind to less swell and more wind, but that didn't stop us. We headed into Faxafloi Bay and saw big flocks of seabirds everywhere. Our captain spotted a blow in the distance. So, we decided to investigate. As we got closer, we discovered a lunge-feeding humpback whale! It was Chopper! We saw this whale lunge-feeding some more. It was swimming close to the boat and we saw the fluke too! Incredible! After we moved on from this whale, we entered exploration mode and had a very brief sighting of a minke whale. It disappeared fast, we did not manage to see it again, so we moved on. There was more birds all around and we admired the mountainous landscape on our way back to port. What a fantastic way to spend an evening!
