CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 09:00

Report from Eldey: This mornings sunrise was stunning and when we sailed out we were greated by the sun and sailed out into a cold northerly wind. Very close to the harbour we saw some harbour porpoises, which came up a few times and then vanished. They are always busy feeding to keep up their energy and body heat. After about an hour of sailing we found a good area and were surrounded by 7 white-beaked dolphins. This was just the beginning of this dolphin day as we continued seeing them throughout the tour and saw roughly 25 in total. In amongst the dolphins we got glipmse of a minke whale. Another one appeared later and we got a better view of these beautiful animals. Slowly we ran out of time and headed back to Reykjavik.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00

Report from Eldey: The sea was calmer than in the morning and we sailed into the sunny bay excited to see what we would find during this afternoon. We often use seabirds as indicators of productive areas, and today once again the birds proved to be invaluable for helping us find the animals: when we reached a large flock of seabirds, we very quickly spotted a big blow and lots of tiny blows. The smaller blows belonged to a pod of 4 white-beaked dolphins and the larger one was made by a humpback whale. This humpback whale was Neila, one of our most regularly seen individuals this year. She seemed to be resting between dives and always showed her fluke when she went under. The dolphins in the mean time seemed to be hunting fish and were moving fast in all directions so we decided to focus on the humpback whale. When more boats approached we moved on to a different area and there we found another pod of 7 dolphins who were feeding and  surfing the waves before they disappeared and we started heading back to Reykjavík.
