CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 09:00

Report from Eldey: The morning started with a bit of rain and cold air, but that was not a problem for our passengers, as they could use our cozy and warm overall suits. The was quite calm, and it didn´t take long for us to have our first sighting, a pod of around 3 harbour porpoises. These were followed by a second pod of 12 porpoises, 2 or 3 minke whales and a pair of humpback whales, all only a few hundred meters apart from each other! With all of these cetaceans so close together, its quite likely the area had a lot of fish they could be feeding on. After spending some time in these rich area, we moved on to a nearby place. On the way to there, we saw a few more porpoises and minkes. We stopped to see if the area hold anything of interest as out of nowhere a humpback started breaching some 50 meters from us! We then headed back home, very happy to have seen so many whales from up-close, including the breaching humpback whale.

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 13:00

Report from Eldey: Even though we went out in a bit in a spray, the weather cleared up shortly after we left the harbor and the sun came out. Our first sighting was a fast traveling minke whale that we spotted in the distance. As we got to the area, it turned out to be a good spot as we were soon surrounded by at least 8 minke whales and a lot of plunge diving Northern gannets. Also 4 humpback whales were feeding in the area and gave us the opportunity to get a good look at them. In addition also a small pod of 5 harbour porpoise appeared and it was nice to see them having a tiny baby with them. On our way back to the harbor we were able to see 2 more minke whales in the distance.

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 17:00

Report from Eldey: We set into the bay with good weather. The rain had stopped, the visibility had increased and the seas continued to be very calm. Compared to the previous ones from today, It took us a slightly longer time to find our first sighting, but this still came in less than an hour. It was a pair of humpback whales, which were likely feeding in an area where a small group of around 4 harbour porpoises was also present. The porpoises surprised us with their quick surfacing, while the humpbacks behaved more calmly and slow. After spending a while with these whales, we left then to go check another pair of humpbacks, which were in a nearby area. As we got there, the humpbacks were rolling on the surface while a pod of around 5 white-beaked dolphins was playing around them. The dolphins seemed to enjoy the play whilst the humpbacks seemed more annoyed by their smaller cousins. We then returned to Reykjavík, accompanied with calm seas and a beautiful rainbow over the horizon. A great way to finish a great tour!
