Whale Diary

A sunny and dry morning out on Faxaflói bay! We found a pod of 6 white-beaked dolphins, including a mother and calf, who joined us twice during the tour, along with a minke whale passing through. In the afternoon, the waves had picked up a little and after a brief sighting of harbour porpoises, we couldn't find any more cetaceans. We gave all afternoon guests complimentary tickets to try their luck again another day. The sunny spell was lovely while it lasted!

A smooth morning out on the bay, where we found a group of harbour porpoises and then two humpback whales, surfacing and diving all around us. In the afternoon, the sunshine brought some beautiful rainbow blows from a humpback whale, which we were able to identify as Chopper — one of our regulars! We then spotted a second humpback whale in the distance before heading back to harbour. Always a treat to see a familiar face out on Faxaflói bay!

A classic Icelandic morning with sun and rain, and a lovely group of 7 white-beaked dolphins right out of the harbour, including 2 playful juveniles! In the afternoon, we headed out into a bit of wind and rain and found a large, calm humpback whale with some beautiful fluke dives. In the evening, we spotted 5-6 curious harbour porpoises and then a humpback whale feeding actively — treating us to a lunge, deep dives, and fluke dives getting closer each time. A full day out on Faxaflói bay!

A serene morning out on Faxaflói bay, where we first encountered a pod of 3 white-beaked dolphins, then a more playful pod of 7 leaping and socialising nearby. To top it off, a humpback whale appeared right in front of the boat! In the afternoon, we found a small group of white-beaked dolphins surfacing close to the boat, and a minke whale to finish things off nicely. A lovely day out on the water!

A fantastic calm morning with high visibility — we encountered an enormous group of 15-20 white-beaked dolphins jumping and feeding around the boat, then 10 more shortly after, and a humpback whale on the way back feeding in a frenzy of seabirds! In the afternoon, we spotted harbour porpoises, a humpback whale, and a pod of 11 white-beaked dolphins — but the true highlight was a tiny minke whale calf, no more than 3 metres long, who took a curious interest in our boat and spent time circling, swimming upside-down and blowing bubbles right beside us. In the captain's 13 years with Elding, he had seen this only four or five times — a truly unforgettable encounter!

A glorious sunny morning out on Faxaflói bay! We found a humpback whale feeding right next to the boat, treating us to some lovely fluke dives, and then spotted 5 white-beaked dolphins including a mom and calf jumping in the distance before coming in close for a great look. In the afternoon, we found a juvenile humpback whale with beautiful fluke dives, and on the way back a minke whale appeared right in front of the boat along with a small group of harbour porpoises. One of those days where Faxaflói just keeps on giving!

A lovely sunny morning out on Faxaflói bay, where we found a humpback whale treating us to some nice fluke dives before heading back to harbour. In the afternoon, the sunshine continued with a bit of a breeze, and this time we spotted not one but two humpback whales! They gave us some great close looks and beautiful fluke dives before we headed back with big smiles. A great day on the bay!

A beautiful mirror-calm morning out on Faxaflói bay! We spotted harbour porpoises, 2 minke whales, and a group of 7 white-beaked dolphins showing off with leaps, breaches, and riding our wake. In the afternoon, the sunshine continued and we found a humpback whale with graceful fluke dives, and then a second humpback pec-slapping right next to the boat — a rare and spectacular interaction! An absolutely brilliant day out on the bay!

A stunning morning out on a glassy, sunny Faxaflói bay! We spotted a minke whale, then arrived at a busy area with 2 more minkes, harbour porpoises, and a humpback whale that fluked repeatedly and even swam under the boat! A pod of 10 white-beaked dolphins rounded things off, along with even more harbour porpoises on the way back. In the afternoon, the sunshine continued and we found a fast-travelling humpback whale with a spectacular fluke, 3 minke whales, and more harbour porpoises. One of those days that reminds you why we love Faxaflói bay!

A beautiful calm morning out on Faxaflói bay! We spotted 3 minke whales, a pod of 4 white-beaked dolphins, a resting humpback whale, and even a pod of 5 harbour porpoises on the way back — a really packed tour! In the afternoon, the flat calm conditions were perfect for spotting, and we found another minke whale and not one but three pods of white-beaked dolphins, some jumping and playing all around the boat. A fantastic day out on the bay!

A very special day out on Faxaflói bay! This morning we headed out in some wind and small waves, and were treated to one of our rarest sightings — a pod of 5 Orcas! Three adult females, a calf, and a large adult male, feeding and socialising. In the afternoon, the orcas were still around and we found them again! After some time with them, we also spotted a pod of harbour porpoises and a humpback whale. An unforgettable day out on the bay!

We headed out this morning under overcast skies with a chilly wind, but that didn't stop us from spotting some great wildlife! We came across a travelling minke whale close to the boat, and then a group of 6 white-beaked dolphins — who eventually came right up to the boat! In the afternoon, we again spotted a minke whale, but the choppy conditions made searching difficult. Since the sightings weren't quite up to our usual standard, we gave all our afternoon guests complimentary tickets to join us again another day. Another day out on beautiful Faxaflói bay!

We sailed out under overcast skies and crisp air. A little minke whale appeared close to us, and we could observe it calmly swimming in a circle just at our front. We also came across a pod of 6 white-beaked dolphins, puffins, arctic terns and even another minke whale on our way home! In the afternoon we again came across minke whales and 5 white-beaked dolphins.

This morning we had a bit of swell, but nevertheless the spotting conditions were great. We first spotted 3 minke whales, then 3 more! Right thereafter, we found a humpback whale as well as 2 pods of harbour porpoises. It was calmer in the afternoon and we saw a pod of 10-15 white-beaked dolphins playing and jumping. We also found a minke whale and a humpback whale!

The bay was gloomy this morning, but the sea was calm and we had prime cetacean spotting conditions. We quickly found 2-3 minke whales before encountering 2 lunge feeding humpback whales! On our way back, we spotted 2 pods of about 7 and 12 white-beaked dolphins. In the afternoon we found a pod of 15 white-beaked dolphins, at least 3 minke whales!

An overcast morning as we headed out to sea, and started our search for whales! We soon spotted some fast and elusive minke whales - 3 in total - feeding and travelling at high speeds. It was difficult to get a good look, so we continued our search but unfortunately didn‘t spot anything else, so gave our guests complimentary tickets to try again another day. In the afternoon, there was a little rain, and we searched the bay far and wide. After some time, we spotted a pod of 10 white-beaked dolphins and close by, a pair of humpback whales! They exhibited some brilliant surface behaviour and we managed a great look at them before heading back to the harbour with smiles on our faces.

Under a beautiful sunny day with a calm bay, we headed out on our morning tour. Soon, we spotted 6-7 white-beaked dolphins playing and jumping, a great sighting! Soon after, we spotted 3-4 minke whales feeding and even more dolphins, which were everywhere in the bay today! A fantastic morning at sea. In the afternoon, we again spotted white-beaked dolphins, around 10 this time, very soon into the tour. Then, a humpback whale! We had some great fluke dives with this individual, and then we had a very busy area with 4 harbour porpoises, 4 minke whales and another 3 humpback whales! The bay was truly alive today!

With a cold wind and sunny skies, we left the harbour and soon noticed how many seabirds were around - a great amount of puffins, fulmars, gannets and more! We spent some time searching in the bay but unfortunately we couldn‘t find anything this time, so gave our guests complimentary tickets to try their luck another time. In the afternoon, we again headed out full of hope, and some beautiful skies & seabirds everywhere! We searched the bay again, and towards Hvalfjörður, but our search turned up fruitless and we gave our passengers complimentary tickets to try once more!
