Whale diary

Today we headed back to the area between the islands where we've had great success lately. Throughout the tour we saw 5 humpback whales and at one point there were whales in all directions! Most of them were feeding, but some were resting and got very close to our boat - we could even see their whole bodies through the water!

We sailed close to Viðey island this afternoon, and not even 15 minutes into the tour, we had found a humpback whale - it was Pongo, an individual last seen in March of this year! We eventually found a harbour seal, as well a second humpback whale in the same area. Then, out of nowhere, Pongo decided to do a single breach for us!

Between Viðey island and the mainland we spotted a total of 3 humpback whales. It was really nice, the whales stayed most of the time in the same area, swimming in circles, feeding. They gave us several flukes, and in the end of the tour, one of them came really close, just a few feet away. Everyone on board were equally ecstatic!

Today was a beautiful winter day with blue skies and calm seas. Throughout the tour we saw a total of 5 humpback whales! We first approached the far side of Viðey and found two whales swimming side by side. Then we spotted a third one a bit further away, then a fourth sleeping and finally a fifth one that was actively feeding!

We quickly found 2 humpback whales surrounding the islands of Viðey and Lundey. Staying with each, one at a time, we had the chance to see 2 very different behaviours: feeding and resting. As the sun started to set over the appearing clouds, we started heading back, luckily noticing small pods of harbour porpoises on our way home.

Our tour started under a white powdered snow storm. After a few minutes of sailing, the head of a grey seal popped up out of nowhere. Then, a humpback whale came up to get some air and this individual seemed to be resting close to the surface, but we got a few good looks at its fluke and determined it was our friend from yesterday!

Today was a bit windy, but we enjoyed nice calm seas. It didn't take us long to find 2 humpback whales between the islands! We split our time between the two, and as they got sleepy, we were lucky to be able to watch them super close to the boat, resting. As we headed back, we all warmed up with some nice hot chocolate!

We had calm seas waiting for us as we sailed into the bay. After only 13 minutes we had already found a feeding humpback whale! Since we didn't want to overstay our welcome, we headed further out and sailed towards Hvalfjörður, where we spotted another humpback whale and even saw a third humpback whale on our way home!

Due to unfavourable conditions in the bay, our whale watching tour from Reykjavík has been cancelled today!

It was the first whale watching tour of December, and although the weather was chilly, the sky was clear and blue. After 30 minutes, we spotted 2 humpback whales that were surfacing regularly and fluking a lot. We also saw a pod of 2-4 shy harbour porpoises and one more humpback whale as we started to make our way back home.

On the last morning tour of the year, we sailed out into darkness, with little wind. After about 30 minutes we spotted a humpback whale very close to our boat! In the afternoon we quickly found our friendly feeding humpback whale once more! We also spotted 2 harbour seals before coming back to the whale on our way home.

This cold winter morning, we had calm seas and were ready to spot some wildlife! We quickly found 2 humpback whales swimming side-by-side, close to our boat! The afternoon tour saw a blow from a feeding humpback whale shortly into the tour, and then found a second humpback whale behind Viðey island also seemingly feeding!

The morning tour was cancelled due to weather, but we sailed in the afternoon, and what a time we had! We hit the water with the wind in our hair and the sun shining bright. After about 20 minutes, we spotted two humpback whales, fluking like crazy! We also got a surprise visit from a couple of harbour seals popping up beside us!

Today’s tours featured a delightful juvenile humpback whale. In the morning, we spotted it outside the islands, thrilling everyone with a fluke dive. In the afternoon, braving the rain and swell, we returned to find the same juvenile and spent plenty of time at the surface and even came close to the boat, giving us an unforgettable close-up.

This morning, we spotted a shy humpback whale near Viðey island, diving long and far until it surprised us by surfacing close to the boat, showing off its white pectoral fins and fluke. In the afternoon, we returned to the same spot and found the same humpback whale, now logging. We also caught a quick glimpse of a curious harbour seal!

In the morning, we spotted a small, active humpback whale near Viðey island, starting with rest before feeding and showing off multiple fluke dives. We also encountered a lively pod of 15 white-beaked dolphins, including 3-4 calves, one just days old! In the afternoon, we found a humpback whale near the cruise ship harbour and a curious harbour seal!

In the morning, we saw the erupting volcano near the Blue Lagoon, but despite searching near Hafnarfjörður and beyond, the whales proved elusive, so we issued complimentary tickets. The afternoon brought better luck as we spotted a juvenile humpback whale. After teasing us with shallow dives, it finally fluked beautifully into the sunset.

This morning, we were very lucky to have nice calm seas and a beautiful sunrise. We were enjoying amazing views of the newly erupting volcano when a humpback whale breached right in front of us! When it resurfaced, it did so with a friend! In the afternoon the pair were seen lunge feeding and we had an incredible sunset on our way back home!

On the morning tour we sailed out to Hafnarfjörður where we found the 2 humpback whales from yesterday, and on our way home we saw 6 fast travelling harbour porpoises! The afternoon tour had a fantastic view of the eruption and again found the 2 feeding humpback whales near Hafnarfjörður, showing us many fluke dives and pec slaps!

We spotted 4 adorable seals this cold morning and were treated to a beautiful sight of the latest volcano but unfortunately we saw no cetaceans.. so we issued complimentary tickets to all on board. In the afternoon, our luck turned as we spotted 7 swift harbour porpoises before finding 2 lunge-feeding humpback whales near Hafnarfjörður!
